After multiple musical bands and pseudonyms (Matt Yearbook, BareBones and Cabaret, The Seizure Police), Matthew P Schöbs has finally released a record under his own name. Matthew releases FEAR AND LOATHING IN OAMARU under his self-established and operated record label, Pale Morning Records.

This album sees a complete change in Matthew’s writing and recording process. In comparison to the WATER/SAND EP (written, recorded and released in a week), these songs were written and drecorded whilst going through severe personal turmoil with the idea that they could become an album as long as life allowed it to.

There are songs of sheer heartbreak. ‘Be The Better Man’ features the weeping pedal steel guitar of Steven Hicken Jnr, a second generation player from the U.K. The album also features psychedelic folk ‘When I Dream In Technicolour’ dedicated to departed friend and inspiration Hamish Kilgour which bookends the album.

Just like in the old days, this is an album to be listened to in one sitting. A journey through five years in the wilderness, trying to survive heartbreak, homelessness and weirdness in small town New Zealand.
